Dryer will not heat; display shows E04
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the dryer and, for gas models, shut off the gas supply before servicing. High voltage is present at the heater terminals.
E04 indicates the control detects an open or abnormal heating circuit.
- Check power supply (electric models): Verify the dryer is receiving full 240V (two hot legs) at the terminal block. A missing leg can cause no heat without an error in some cases.
- Access the heater assembly: Remove the rear panel or lower front panel (model dependent) to access the heater housing.
- Test the thermal fuse: Locate the thermal fuse on or near the blower housing. Disconnect wires and test for continuity. If open, replace the fuse and thoroughly check for blocked airflow.
- Test the heating element: Disconnect the element leads and test for continuity between the terminals and for no continuity to the metal housing (no short to ground). Replace the element if open or shorted.
- Inspect thermostats: Test the high-limit thermostat and cycling thermostat for continuity at room temperature. Replace any that test open.
After replacing failed components, reassemble, restore power, and run a test cycle. If E04 returns with all components good, the main control board heater relay may be defective.
