Possible Causes

Open heating element, Tripped or failed high-limit thermostat, Faulty heater relay on main control PCB, Loose or burnt heater wiring connector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect the dryer from the mains. Heating components can retain heat; allow the appliance to cool fully before working on it.

  • Check basic airflow: Before opening the dryer, clean the lint filter and condenser (if fitted) to ensure airflow is not causing overheating and heater shutdown.
  • Access heater assembly: On many Rangemaster dryers, the heater is mounted on the rear bulkhead. Remove the rear panel screws and carefully lift off the panel to expose the heater housing.
  • Inspect wiring: Look for burnt connectors or discoloured wires at the heater terminals and thermostats. Repair any damaged wiring and replace overheated connectors.
  • Test heating element: Disconnect the heater terminals and measure resistance with a multimeter. A typical element will show a finite resistance (often 20–60 Ω). If it reads open circuit, replace the heater assembly.
  • Check thermostats/thermal cut-outs: Test each thermostat on the heater housing for continuity at room temperature. Any thermostat that reads open should be replaced. If a manual-reset thermostat is present, press the reset button once only; if it trips again, investigate airflow and heater issues.
  • Control board check: If the heater and thermostats test good but there is still no heat and E04 persists, the heater relay or triac on the main control PCB may be faulty and the board may need replacement.
