Possible Causes
Failed motor start capacitor, Seized or stiff drum support rollers, Faulty drive motor, Broken or jammed drive belt
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect the dryer from the mains before removing any panels. Beware of sharp metal edges inside the cabinet.
- Check drum movement: With the dryer off, open the door and rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is very stiff or jammed, suspect seized rollers or a foreign object.
- Listen for motor hum: If the motor hums but the drum does not turn, the start capacitor or a mechanical obstruction is likely.
- Access drive system: Remove the top cover and rear panel (or front panel, depending on model) to expose the drive belt and motor.
- Inspect drive belt: Check if the belt is broken, off the pulley, or heavily worn. Replace the belt if damaged and ensure it is correctly routed around the motor and idler pulleys.
- Check motor capacitor: Locate the motor start capacitor near the motor. After discharging it safely (short through a resistor), disconnect and test its capacitance with a meter. Replace if it is significantly out of specification or visibly swollen.
- Inspect drum rollers and idler pulley: Spin each roller and the idler pulley by hand. Replace any that are noisy, rough, or seized.
