Possible Causes
Failed drum drive motor, Open or shorted motor capacitor, Broken or slipped drive belt, Faulty motor relay on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect the dryer from mains power before accessing internal components. Capacitors can hold charge; discharge safely if testing.
- Check drum movement: With power off, open the door and try to rotate the drum by hand. It should turn smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is jammed, inspect for foreign objects between drum and cabinet.
- Inspect the drive belt: Remove the top cover and rear panel as required on your SMEG model. Verify the belt is intact, properly tensioned, and wrapped around the motor pulley and idler pulley. Replace the belt if frayed, cracked, or broken.
- Test the motor capacitor: Locate the motor start/run capacitor near the motor. Disconnect leads (after discharging) and test with a capacitance meter. If the reading is far from the rated µF value or shows open/short, replace the capacitor.
- Check motor windings: Disconnect the motor connector and measure resistance across the windings. Compare to service specs; an open or shorted winding indicates a bad motor.
- Control board relay: If motor, belt, and capacitor are good, inspect the main control board for a stuck or burnt motor relay. Replacement of the control module is usually required if the relay is defective.
