Possible Causes
Blocked internal airflow causing cabinet overheating, Failed or weak cooling fan (if fitted), High ambient temperature around dryer, Faulty safety thermostat or sensor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power and allow the dryer to cool completely before inspection. Surfaces and components may be very hot.
- Improve ventilation: Ensure the dryer has adequate clearance from walls and cabinets as specified in the SMEG manual. Do not block ventilation grilles.
- Clean internal lint: Remove top and rear panels and vacuum lint from around the heater, motor, and internal ducts. Pay attention to areas near thermostats and sensors.
- Check cooling fan (if present): Some models have an internal cabinet cooling fan. Verify that the fan spins freely and runs during operation. Replace the fan motor if seized or not powered.
- Test safety thermostat: Locate the safety thermostat on the cabinet or heater housing. With wires disconnected and the unit cool, check for continuity. Replace if open and not resettable.
- Reset and test: After cleaning and any part replacement, reconnect power and run a short cycle while monitoring for excessive heat or recurrence of E18.
