How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Immediately stop the dryer, unplug it, and do not continue using it until the cause is found. Fire risk is present.
- Inspect lint filter and vent: Clean the lint screen and check the vent hose and exterior vent for blockages.
- Access heater area: Remove the rear panel (electric) or front lower panel (gas) and inspect the heater housing for lint accumulation or foreign objects.
- Clean thoroughly: Vacuum lint from the heater housing, blower housing, and cabinet floor. Ensure no fabric pieces are near the heater.
- Check motor: Smell near the motor area. If the burning smell is strongest there and the motor is very hot, the motor may be failing and should be replaced.
- Test run: After cleaning and inspection, run the dryer empty for a short time while monitoring for any remaining odor. If the smell persists or smoke appears, disconnect power and have a professional inspect it.
