Possible Causes
Restricted airflow, Failing drive motor overheating, Lint buildup in cabinet, Worn drum support components increasing load
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the dryer and allow it to cool before servicing. Internal parts may be hot.
- Clean airflow path: Remove and clean the lint filter, vent hose, blower housing, and internal ducts. Ensure strong airflow at the exterior vent.
- Inspect motor: Remove the front panel and drum to access the motor. Check for lint buildup on the motor and blower wheel. Clean thoroughly.
- Check drum rotation: Spin the drum by hand (with belt on). It should turn smoothly. If stiff, inspect rollers, idler pulley, and glides for wear.
- Motor replacement: If the dryer consistently shuts off after a short run time and airflow and drum components are good, the motor's internal thermal protector may be weak. Replace the drive motor with the correct Whirlpool part.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall all parts, restore power, and run a full cycle to confirm the dryer no longer shuts off prematurely.
