Possible Causes
Open-circuit exhaust thermistor, Broken thermistor wiring harness, Unplugged thermistor connector, Corroded thermistor terminals
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the dryer before accessing the rear panel or heater housing.
- Locate thermistor: On most Whirlpool dryers, the exhaust thermistor is mounted on the blower housing or exhaust duct inside the cabinet, near the lint duct.
- Access component: Remove the rear panel (electric) or front lower panel (some gas models) to reach the blower housing.
- Check connections: Ensure the thermistor's two-wire connector is fully seated and not corroded or broken.
- Test thermistor: Disconnect the thermistor and measure its resistance with a multimeter at room temperature. Typical Whirlpool thermistors read around 10k ohms at 77°F (25°C). An infinite reading indicates an open thermistor.
- Inspect wiring: Follow the harness back to the main control, checking for breaks or pinched sections.
- Replace thermistor: If open or out of specification, install a new Whirlpool exhaust thermistor. Secure it firmly to the housing for proper temperature sensing.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, restore power, clear the error (if needed), and run a timed dry cycle to confirm proper heating.
