Possible Causes

Broken moisture sensor bars, Disconnected moisture sensor harness, Open wiring between sensor and control, Corroded sensor connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect power before accessing internal wiring.

  • Locate moisture sensor: On Whirlpool dryers, the moisture sensor bars are typically inside the drum, mounted on the front bulkhead just below the lint screen opening.
  • Clean sensor bars: Wipe the metal bars with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol to remove fabric softener residue that can interfere with sensing (this alone will not fix an open circuit but is good maintenance).
  • Access wiring: Remove the front panel or lower access panel to reach the back side of the moisture sensor bars.
  • Check connections: Ensure the small wires attached to the sensor bars are firmly connected and not broken.
  • Continuity test: Disconnect the harness and test continuity across the sensor circuit (through the bars) with a multimeter. An open reading indicates a broken bar or wire.
  • Repair or replace: Repair any broken wires or replace the moisture sensor assembly if the bars are cracked or the terminals are corroded beyond cleaning.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, restore power, and run an automatic (sensor) dry cycle to confirm proper operation and that F28 is cleared.
