Possible Causes
Failed igniter, Worn gas valve coils, Open flame sensor, Blown thermal fuse
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Unplug the dryer and shut off the gas supply before servicing. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames.
- Check drum and motor: Ensure the drum turns and the motor runs. If the motor does not run, address that first.
- Access burner assembly: Remove the lower front panel or front panel to view the burner, igniter, and gas valve coils.
- Observe ignition attempt: Restore power and gas, start a heat cycle, and watch through the burner view port. If the igniter does not glow at all, suspect the igniter or thermal fuse. If it glows but no flame appears, suspect gas valve coils or gas supply.
- Test thermal fuse: Unplug again, locate the thermal fuse on the blower housing, and test for continuity. Replace if open and also correct any airflow issues that caused it to blow.
- Test igniter: Disconnect the igniter and measure resistance. An open igniter must be replaced.
- Replace gas valve coils: If the igniter glows and then shuts off without flame, replace the pair of gas valve coils on top of the gas valve with a Whirlpool coil kit.
- Check flame sensor: Test the flame sensor for continuity at room temperature. Replace if open.
- Reassemble and test: Reinstall panels, restore gas and power, and run a test cycle to confirm consistent ignition and heating.
