Possible Causes
Failed control board components, Overheated control box due to blocked ventilation, Power surge damage, Shorted heating element drawing excessive current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow all components to cool. Do not bypass safety devices.
Steps to address E4:
- Inspect control box location: Ensure the control box is not covered or exposed to direct high heat from another appliance. It must have airflow around it.
- Check for visible damage: Remove the control box cover and look for burnt components, melted plastic, or a burnt smell. If present, the control box should be replaced rather than repaired by a homeowner.
- Inspect heating element: Examine the heating element for cracks, burn‑through, or signs of shorting to the metal frame. A shorted element can trip internal protection.
- Test element resistance: With the smoker unplugged and element leads disconnected, measure resistance across the element. A very low reading (near 0 ohms) or continuity to ground indicates a shorted element that must be replaced.
- Replace faulty parts: Replace the heating element if shorted. If the element is normal but E4 persists, replace the digital control box assembly.
If you are not comfortable testing live circuits, contact a qualified appliance technician.
