Possible Causes
Failed cabinet thermistor, Broken sensor harness near cabinet wall, Connector not fully seated on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power before removing any panels.
- Locate the ambient sensor: On many Char‑Broil electric smokers, the ambient sensor is mounted inside the cabinet wall or near the exhaust. Identify the two‑wire sensor and trace its harness.
- Check harness and connector: Inspect the harness for pinched or cut insulation, especially where it passes through metal. Reseat the connector at the control board.
- Measure resistance: With the sensor unplugged, measure resistance across its leads. An infinite or near‑zero reading indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace sensor if defective: Remove the mounting screw or clip, pull the sensor out, and install a new OEM Char‑Broil thermistor/RTD. Route the wire through the original grommet to prevent chafing.
- Power up and test: Reassemble, plug in, and verify that the E1 code clears and the smoker can be set to a temperature.
