Possible Causes
Faulty main control board, Intermittent sensor connection, Power surge damage to microcontroller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before touching the control board.
- Reset power: Leave the smoker unplugged for at least 5 minutes to allow the control board to fully discharge. Plug back in and test.
- Verify sensor connections: Confirm that all temperature sensor connectors are fully seated and that pins are not bent.
- Inspect the control board: Remove the control housing and visually inspect the board for burn marks, swollen capacitors, or cracked solder joints.
- Check supply voltage: With appropriate caution and only if you are comfortable working around live voltage, verify that the board is receiving correct AC input. If voltage is unstable, address the outlet or extension cord issue first.
- Replace the control board: If sensors test good and wiring is intact but E3 persists, replace the main control board with the correct Char‑Broil OEM board. Transfer all connectors one at a time to avoid miswiring.
