Control panel displays ERR1 and smoker will not heat

Safety first: Unplug the smoker from the outlet and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.

• Inspect the cabinet temperature sensor: Locate the temperature probe inside the smoker cabinet (usually on a side wall). Check that it is not bent, broken, or coated in heavy grease or creosote. Clean gently with a damp cloth if dirty.
• Check sensor wiring: Remove the rear or side access panel to expose the wiring. Follow the two wires from the temperature sensor to the control board. Look for cuts, burns, or rodent damage. Reseat any loose push-on connectors.
• Test continuity: Using a multimeter set to resistance (ohms), disconnect the sensor from the board and measure across the two sensor leads. An open circuit (OL) or zero ohms indicates a failed sensor. Compare the reading to the service manual chart if available.
• Replace the sensor if faulty: If the sensor is open or out of spec, remove the mounting screw(s) inside the cabinet, pull the sensor and wire through, and install a new OEM Char‑Broil cabinet temperature sensor. Route the wire away from hot surfaces and sharp edges, then reconnect to the control board.
• Reset power: Reassemble panels, plug the smoker back in, and power on. Clear the error by turning the unit off and back on. Verify that the smoker now heats and tracks temperature correctly.
