Possible Causes

Broken cabinet temperature probe, Probe wiring harness unplugged or damaged, Failed probe input on IQ controller, Corroded probe connector at controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker from power before removing panels or touching wiring. Allow the smoker to cool completely.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Power-cycle the controller: Turn the smoker OFF, unplug for 5 minutes, then plug back in and power ON. If ERR1 returns immediately, continue.
  • 2. Inspect the cabinet temperature probe: Locate the fixed temperature probe inside the cooking chamber (usually a metal rod or bulb on the side or back wall). Check for physical damage, broken tip, or heavy corrosion. If broken or missing, the probe must be replaced.
  • 3. Check probe wiring: Remove the controller mounting screws and gently pull the IQ controller forward. Trace the two probe wires from the cabinet probe to the controller. Ensure the connector is fully seated and not corroded or burnt. Reseat the connector.
  • 4. Test probe continuity: With the smoker unplugged, disconnect the probe leads from the controller. Use a multimeter set to ohms. A typical Cookshack cabinet probe should show a finite resistance (often 1–100 kΩ depending on temperature). If the meter reads OL (open) or infinite resistance, the probe is open and must be replaced.
  • 5. Inspect controller input: If you have a known-good replacement probe, temporarily connect it directly to the controller. If ERR1 clears, the original probe or wiring is faulty. If ERR1 remains, the controller’s probe input is likely defective.
  • 6. Replace parts as needed: Replace the cabinet temperature probe and/or wiring harness if open or damaged. If the controller input is bad, replace the IQ controller assembly.

When to call a technician: If you are not comfortable testing with a multimeter or accessing internal wiring, or if the controller PCB appears burnt or damaged, contact a qualified appliance technician or Cookshack support.
