Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If the smoker is excessively hot or smoking heavily, turn it OFF and leave the door closed until it cools. Do not open the door if there is a fire risk.
Steps to resolve:
- 1. Allow full cool-down: Unplug the smoker and let it cool completely. Once cool, plug back in and power ON to see if ERR3 clears.
- 2. Check set temperature: Verify that the set temperature on the IQ controller is within the smoker’s rated range (typically 140–300°F or model-specific). Avoid setting maximum temperature for extended periods.
- 3. Inspect probe placement: Ensure the fixed cabinet probe is not bent toward the heating element or touching metal surfaces that get extremely hot. Gently reposition if necessary.
- 4. Clean the probe: Heavy carbon or grease buildup can cause inaccurate readings. Clean the probe with a soft pad and degreaser, then rinse and dry.
- 5. Compare with a reference thermometer: Run the smoker empty at 225°F and place an oven thermometer near the probe. If the controller reads much higher than the reference (e.g., 50°F+ difference), the probe may be faulty and should be replaced.
- 6. Replace suspect components: If ERR3 recurs at normal temperatures, replace the cabinet temperature probe. If the issue persists with a new probe, the IQ controller may need replacement.
Warning: Repeated over-temperature faults can indicate a stuck relay or control failure. If the smoker continues heating with the controller OFF, unplug immediately and contact a technician.
