Possible Causes
Meat probe not plugged into controller jack, Broken or cut meat probe cable, Damaged meat probe tip, Failed meat probe input on IQ controller
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before handling the controller or probe connections.
How to troubleshoot:
- 1. Confirm model features: Verify that your Cookshack smoker and IQ controller support a meat probe. Some models show ERR4 only when a meat-probe-based program is selected.
- 2. Check probe connection: Ensure the Cookshack meat probe is fully inserted into the meat probe jack on the front of the IQ controller. Push firmly until it seats.
- 3. Inspect the probe cable: Look for cuts, kinks, or melted insulation, especially where the cable passes through the door or near racks. Replace the probe if damaged.
- 4. Test with a multimeter: Unplug the probe from the controller and measure resistance between the tip and ring of the plug. A typical probe will show a finite resistance (hundreds to thousands of ohms). If it reads open (OL), the probe is bad.
- 5. Try a known-good probe: If available, plug in a spare Cookshack meat probe. If ERR4 clears, the original probe is faulty. If ERR4 persists, the controller’s meat probe input may be defective.
- 6. Controller replacement: If multiple probes fail to clear ERR4, replace the IQ controller assembly.
Tip: Avoid closing the smoker door on the probe cable; always route it through the designated notch or gap.
