Possible Causes

Meat probe tip shorted to sheath, Probe cable melted to rack or cabinet, Moisture ingress into probe, Meat probe input failure on IQ controller

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF and unplug the smoker before handling the probe or controller.

Steps:

  • 1. Remove the meat probe: Unplug the probe from the controller and remove it from the food. Wipe it clean and dry thoroughly.
  • 2. Inspect for damage: Look for burn marks, melted insulation, or exposed wires along the probe cable. Check that the metal probe tip is intact and not bent or crushed.
  • 3. Check routing: Ensure the cable has not been resting directly on a rack or touching the heating element. Heat damage often causes internal shorts.
  • 4. Test resistance: With a multimeter on ohms, measure between the plug contacts. A shorted probe will read near 0 Ω. Replace the probe if shorted or if readings jump erratically when you flex the cable.
  • 5. Try a new probe: Connect a new Cookshack meat probe and run a short test cook. If ERR5 does not return, the original probe was faulty. If ERR5 persists, the IQ controller’s meat probe circuit may be damaged and require replacement.

Note: Do not immerse the entire probe and cable in water; only the metal tip is typically rated for immersion. Excess moisture can cause internal shorts.
