Possible Causes

Stuck heating element relay on IQ controller, Failed high-limit thermostat (if equipped) stuck closed, Blocked exhaust vent causing heat buildup, Temperature probe misreading high

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect overheating, do not open the door immediately. Turn OFF the smoker, unplug it, and monitor for signs of fire. Keep a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires nearby.

Steps to diagnose:

  • 1. Allow full cool-down: Wait until the cabinet is cool to the touch. Then plug in and power ON to see if the error clears.
  • 2. Check exhaust and airflow: Make sure the exhaust vent is open and not blocked by foil, grease, or debris. Clear any obstructions.
  • 3. Inspect heating element operation: With the door open and the smoker set to a low temperature, observe whether the heating element cycles ON and OFF. If it stays ON continuously even when the set temperature is reached, the relay on the controller may be stuck.
  • 4. Test high-limit thermostat (if present): Some Cookshack models have a manual-reset high-limit thermostat on the back or top of the cabinet. Look for a small red button; press to reset. If it trips repeatedly, investigate for airflow or control issues.
  • 5. Verify temperature readings: Run the smoker at 225°F with an oven thermometer inside. If the actual temperature is normal but the controller shows HI TEMP, the cabinet probe or controller is misreading and should be tested and replaced as needed.

Warning: A stuck relay or failed high-limit device is a serious safety issue. If the element heats with the controller OFF, unplug immediately and have the controller and wiring inspected by a professional.
