Possible Causes
Sticking relay on IQ controller, Miscalibrated or damaged cabinet temperature probe, Poor airflow around probe, High-limit thermostat stuck closed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If the smoker is excessively hot, turn it OFF and unplug it. Allow it to cool before working on it.
Steps:
- 1. Confirm overshoot: Use an oven thermometer to verify that the actual temperature is significantly higher than the setpoint.
- 2. Clean and inspect probe: Remove grease and carbon from the cabinet probe. Ensure it is not touching metal surfaces or the heating element.
- 3. Observe element cycling: With the smoker running, watch whether the element cycles OFF when the set temperature is reached. If it stays ON continuously, the relay or triac on the controller may be stuck and the controller should be replaced.
- 4. Check high-limit thermostat: If your model has a manual-reset high-limit, verify it has not been bypassed. Replace if defective.
- 5. Replace probe: If the probe reads significantly lower than actual temperature, replace it with a Cookshack OEM probe.
