Possible Causes
Blocked exhaust vent, Failed high‑limit thermostat stuck closed until extreme temps, Temperature sensor touching heating element or metal surface, Control board overdriving element
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely before inspection.
- Check exhaust and intake: Ensure the top vent is open and not covered with foil or grease. Clean any heavy buildup around vent openings.
- Inspect sensor location: Inside the cabinet, verify the temperature probe is not bent into direct contact with the heating element, water pan, or metal rack. Gently reposition it to its original location.
- Clean interior surfaces: Heavy grease buildup can create hot spots. Remove racks, water pan, and drip tray, and clean the interior with a degreaser suitable for smokers.
- Test sensor and high‑limit: If "Hi" appears even at startup, test the temperature sensor and high‑limit thermostat with a meter. Replace any component that is out of spec.
- Control board replacement: If all hardware checks out but "Hi" persists, the control board may be misreading the sensor or driving the element incorrectly. Replace the main control board.
