How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker and let it cool completely. Do not operate if there is visible smoke from wiring or plastic.
Inspection steps:
- Open the smoker and remove racks and drip pan to inspect for heavy grease buildup around the heating element and walls. Clean thoroughly with a degreaser safe for appliances.
- Access the rear or bottom service panel to locate the high-limit thermostat (small disc-style thermostat mounted near the heating element area).
- Check for a manual reset button on the high-limit thermostat (some GE Profile smokers use a resettable type). If present, press firmly until you feel a click.
- Inspect wiring to the high-limit thermostat and temperature sensor for melted insulation or loose spade connectors. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Use a multimeter to test continuity across the high-limit thermostat at room temperature. An open circuit indicates a failed thermostat that must be replaced.
- If the thermostat tests good, verify the cooking chamber temperature sensor is not shorted (measure resistance; a near-zero reading indicates a short).
- Replace any failed component with a GE-approved high-limit thermostat or temperature sensor for your Profile smoker model.
If the smoker still shows E2 after component replacement, the main control board may be misreading temperature and should be evaluated by a technician.
