Possible Causes

Failed ambient temperature sensor near control panel, Loose sensor harness connection, Sensor wiring pinched or cut during transport, Control board sensor input failure

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power before removing any control panel screws.

How to check the ambient sensor:

  • Remove the control panel bezel or front trim (usually held by Phillips screws) to access the control board area.
  • Locate the small thermistor or RTD sensor mounted near the air intake or behind the control panel, connected by a two-wire harness.
  • Inspect the harness for pinched or cut insulation, especially where it passes through metal openings. Repair with high-temperature wire and proper connectors if damaged.
  • Unplug and reseat the sensor connector on the control board.
  • Measure resistance of the sensor at room temperature and compare to the service chart if available; a reading of infinite or near-zero ohms indicates a failed sensor.
  • Replace the ambient temperature sensor with a GE-compatible part if readings are out of range.
  • Reassemble the control panel, restore power, and test.

If E3 remains, the control board's sensor circuit may be defective and require replacement.
