Possible Causes

Failed main control board temperature circuit, Corroded sensor connector on control PCB, Incorrect sensor type installed

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker before accessing the control panel.

  • Verify correct sensor: Confirm that any recently replaced temperature sensor is the correct GE part number for your smoker model. An incorrect sensor type can trigger E4.
  • Inspect control board connectors: Remove the control panel bezel to access the main control board. Locate the temperature sensor connector and inspect for bent pins, corrosion, or loose fit.
  • Clean and reseat: Use electrical contact cleaner on the connector, then firmly reseat it. Ensure the harness is not under tension.
  • Check for board damage: Look for burnt components, darkened areas, or cracked solder joints near the sensor input on the PCB. Any visible damage usually requires board replacement.
  • Power cycle: Reassemble the panel, plug in the smoker, and perform a full power cycle by unplugging for 5 minutes, then reconnecting. If E4 persists and the sensor is known good, the control board will likely need replacement.
