Possible Causes
Shorted temperature sensor, Stuck-closed heating relay, Bypassed or failed high-limit thermostat, Control board logic failure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker immediately if it overheats. Do not leave it unattended while testing.
- Check sensor wiring: Inspect the cabinet temperature sensor and its wiring for melted insulation or shorts to the cabinet.
- Test sensor resistance: With the smoker unplugged and cool, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. A near-zero reading indicates a shorted sensor that must be replaced.
- Inspect relay contacts: Access the control board and check the heating relay. If the element remains hot even when the smoker is off, the relay may be welded closed and the board must be replaced.
- Verify high-limit: Confirm the high-limit thermostat is present and wired correctly. Never bypass this safety device.
- Do not operate until repaired: Overheating is a fire hazard. Replace faulty components before using the smoker again.
