Possible Causes

Failed temperature sensor probe, Broken or loose sensor wiring harness, Corroded sensor connector on control board, Damaged control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker from the mains and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.

Steps to check and correct:

  • Locate the temperature sensor: On most Landmann electric smokers, the cabinet temperature sensor (NTC probe) is mounted on the inner rear wall, usually a small metal probe with two wires leading to the control housing.
  • Inspect the sensor and wiring: Remove the rear or side access panel. Follow the two sensor wires from the probe to the main control board. Look for broken insulation, pinched wires, or disconnected spade/plug connectors. Reseat any loose connectors firmly.
  • Check for corrosion: If the sensor plug at the control board is corroded or burnt, clean lightly with electrical contact cleaner and a soft brush, then reconnect. If the plastic housing is melted or pins are missing, the harness or board must be replaced.
  • Test the sensor (if you have a multimeter): Disconnect the sensor from the board. Measure resistance across the two sensor leads at room temperature. A typical NTC sensor will read between 5 kΩ and 100 kΩ depending on design; an infinite (OL) reading indicates an open sensor. Compare with Landmann’s service specs if available.
  • Replace the sensor if open or physically damaged: Remove the mounting screw or nut holding the probe, pull the old sensor out, route the new sensor wires the same way, and secure them with existing clips away from hot surfaces. Reconnect to the control board.
  • Reassemble and test: Refit the access panel, plug the smoker back in, and power on. Set a low temperature and confirm that E1 no longer appears and the element heats.

When to call a technician: If the sensor tests good but E1 persists, the control board’s sensor input may be faulty and the main control module should be professionally diagnosed and replaced.
