Possible Causes
Blocked exhaust vent causing heat buildup, Incorrect temperature sensor placement touching heating element, Faulty control calibration, Stuck heating relay keeping element on too long
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off and unplug the smoker. Allow it to cool completely before inspection.
Steps to correct overtemperature:
- Check venting: Ensure the top or side exhaust vent is fully open and not covered by foil or debris. Clean any grease buildup around vents.
- Inspect sensor placement: From inside the cabinet, verify that the temperature sensor probe is not bent into direct contact with the heating element or metal surfaces that get extremely hot. Gently reposition if necessary.
- Clean interior: Excess grease and residue can cause hot spots. Remove racks and water pan, then clean the interior surfaces with a non-abrasive cleaner once cool.
- Monitor operation: After cleaning and repositioning, run the smoker empty at a moderate set temperature and watch the display. If H1 recurs quickly, the heating relay on the control board may be sticking and should be replaced with the board.
Warning: Do not bypass safety devices or operate the smoker with known overheat issues; this is a fire hazard.
