Possible Causes
Meat probe not fully inserted into jack, Meat probe cable damaged or cut, Probe tip contaminated with moisture or grease, Meat probe input circuit on control board failed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before handling internal wiring. The meat probe itself can be handled while plugged in, but avoid hot surfaces.
- Check probe connection: Ensure the meat probe plug is fully inserted into the jack on the control panel. Remove and reinsert firmly.
- Inspect the cable: Look for kinks, cuts, or melted sections along the probe cable. Replace the probe if any damage is found.
- Clean the probe: Wipe the metal probe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly. Do not immerse the entire probe and cable in water.
- Test with boiling water: Insert the probe tip into boiling water (without submerging the cable connection). The reading should be near 212°F (100°C) depending on altitude. Large deviations indicate a bad probe.
- Control board check: If a new probe still shows ErrP, the probe input on the control board may be defective and the board will need replacement.
