Possible Causes
Inadequate drying after use, Harsh cleaners removing protective coating, Standing water in drip pan, Exposure to weather when stored outdoors
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the smoker is unplugged and cool before cleaning.
- Remove loose rust: Use a non-metallic scrub pad or fine steel wool to gently remove surface rust from racks and interior panels.
- Clean and dry: Wipe down with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly.
- Season interior: Lightly coat interior surfaces (not the heating element) with a high-smoke-point cooking oil and run the smoker at a moderate temperature for 1–2 hours to build a protective layer.
- Improve storage: Store the smoker under a weather-resistant cover and avoid leaving water in the drip or water pans between uses.
