Possible Causes
Shorted heating element, Shorted wiring harness to element, Failed triac or relay on main control PCB, Moisture intrusion causing tracking on control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely before inspection.
- Inspect heating element: Remove the cooking racks and drip tray to expose the heating element. Look for burn-through spots, cracks, or areas where the element has contacted metal surfaces. If the element is deformed or visibly damaged, it should be replaced.
- Check wiring harness: Follow the wires from the element to the control area. Look for melted insulation, pinched wires, or signs of arcing against the cabinet. Repair requires replacing the damaged harness or using manufacturer-approved connectors and high-temp wire.
- Dry out moisture: If the smoker was pressure-washed or stored in a damp area, moisture may have entered the control housing. Remove the access panel and allow the interior to air dry for 24 hours in a warm, dry location. Do not use a heat gun directly on electronics.
- Retry operation: After inspection and drying, plug in and attempt a low-temperature cycle. If E02 reappears immediately, the control board’s switching device (relay/triac) or the element is likely shorted and should be tested with a multimeter and replaced as needed.
