Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before removing the control panel or any covers. Allow the unit to cool completely.
Steps to address E4 control fault:
- 1. Inspect control housing: Check the front control panel area for signs of moisture, grease buildup, or insect nests that could cause overheating or shorting.
- 2. Ensure ventilation: Verify that any vents or slots around the control housing are not blocked by foil, insulation, or debris. The control board needs airflow to stay within safe temperature limits.
- 3. Open the control panel: Remove the screws securing the control module. Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the control board. Do not stress the wiring harness.
- 4. Look for damage: Examine the PCB for burnt spots, cracked components, or bulging capacitors. Any obvious damage usually means the board must be replaced.
- 5. Dry out moisture: If you see condensation or moisture, gently dry the area with a lint-free cloth and allow the board to air dry for several hours in a warm, dry environment. Do not use high heat directly on the board.
- 6. Reseat connectors: Disconnect and reconnect the main harness connectors to the control board to clear oxidation and ensure solid contact.
- 7. Test after cooling: Reassemble the control panel, plug in the smoker, and attempt to start a cook cycle. If E4 no longer appears, monitor the smoker for normal operation.
- 8. Replace the control module if E4 persists: If the error returns immediately or the board shows visible damage, replace the entire OEM Old Smokey digital control module. Transfer each connector one at a time to avoid miswiring.
Warning: Do not bypass safety circuits or operate the smoker with the control panel open. If you are not comfortable working around live electrical components, contact a qualified appliance technician.
