Possible Causes

Household voltage outside acceptable range, Power surge damage to control power supply, Loose neutral or hot connection in smoker, Faulty internal transformer or power supply circuit

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker before opening any panels. Do not operate the smoker on known unstable or undersized circuits.

Steps to address E9 power supply issues:

  • 1. Verify outlet voltage: Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the outlet. For most Old Smokey electric smokers, it should be approximately 120 VAC (North America). If voltage is significantly low or high, contact an electrician.
  • 2. Avoid extension cords: Plug the smoker directly into a dedicated outlet. Long or undersized extension cords can cause voltage drop and trigger E9.
  • 3. Inspect the power cord and plug: Look for heat damage, discoloration, or loose blades on the plug. Replace the cord set if any defects are found.
  • 4. Check internal connections: Remove the access panel and inspect the terminal block where the power cord connects, as well as the connections to the control board. Tighten any loose screws and reseat push-on connectors.
  • 5. Examine the control board power section: Look for burnt components, cracked solder joints, or a damaged transformer (if used). Any visible damage usually requires control board replacement.
  • 6. Surge protection: After repair or replacement, consider using a heavy-duty surge protector rated for appliances to protect the smoker from future surges.
  • 7. Replace the control board if necessary: If outlet voltage is normal and wiring is sound but E9 persists, the internal power supply on the control board is likely damaged. Replace with an OEM Old Smokey control module.

Warning: Do not attempt to modify or bypass the power supply circuitry. Incorrect repairs can create shock and fire hazards.
