Possible Causes
Extended high-temperature operation, Aggressive cleaning with abrasives, Moisture and rust under coating, Manufacturing defect in coating adhesion
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the smoker to cool completely before scraping or cleaning. Wear a dust mask and eye protection when removing loose coating.
Steps to address peeling interior coating:
- 1. Remove loose material: Use a plastic scraper or stiff brush to remove all loose, flaking coating from the interior surfaces.
- 2. Clean and dry: Wipe down the interior with a mild degreaser and water, then dry thoroughly to prevent rust.
- 3. Season the bare metal: Lightly coat exposed metal with a thin layer of high-smoke-point cooking oil and run the smoker at medium temperature for 1–2 hours to create a protective seasoning layer.
- 4. Avoid harsh abrasives: In future cleanings, avoid steel wool or metal scrapers that can damage remaining coating.
- 5. Monitor for rust: If heavy rust develops, gently remove loose rust and re-season. Severe structural rust may require replacing the smoker body.
Note: Do not apply household paints inside the smoker. Only use finishes specifically rated for high-temperature food-contact environments, and follow manufacturer guidance.
