Possible Causes
Warped lid, Damaged or missing lid gasket (if equipped), Debris preventing proper lid seating, Dented smoker body rim
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Allow the smoker to cool before adjusting the lid or body. Wear gloves to avoid sharp metal edges.
Steps to improve smoke sealing:
- 1. Clean the lid and rim: Remove grease, soot, and food debris from the lid edge and body rim with a non-abrasive cleaner. Build-up can prevent a tight seal.
- 2. Check for warping: Place the lid upside down on a flat surface to see if it rocks. Minor warping can sometimes be corrected by gentle hand pressure; severe warping may require lid replacement.
- 3. Inspect gasket (if present): Some Old Smokey owners add high-temperature gasket material. Replace any torn or compressed gasket with new high-temp smoker gasket tape.
- 4. Check body rim for dents: Gently tap out small dents with a rubber mallet from the inside to restore a round, even rim.
- 5. Accept minor leakage: A small amount of smoke leakage is normal and not harmful. Focus on large gaps that significantly reduce chamber temperature.
Note: Do not use flammable sealants or household caulk on the smoker body. Only use materials rated for high temperatures and food-contact environments.
