Possible Causes
Stripped thermostat shaft, Cracked control knob, Internal thermostat failure, Loose mounting hardware
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before removing the control knob or thermostat.
Steps to restore proper control knob function:
- 1. Remove the knob: Pull the control knob straight off the thermostat shaft. Inspect the knob's internal splines for cracks or wear.
- 2. Inspect the thermostat shaft: Check for rounding, cracks, or wobble. If the shaft is damaged, the thermostat must be replaced.
- 3. Tighten mounting hardware: Remove the front mounting nut or screws holding the thermostat to the panel. Reposition and tighten so the shaft is centered and stable.
- 4. Replace the knob: If the knob is cracked or loose on an otherwise good shaft, install a new OEM Old Smokey control knob.
- 5. Replace the thermostat if non-responsive: If turning the shaft does not change heating behavior (always on or always off), replace the mechanical thermostat with the correct OEM part.
Note: Mark the new knob's position relative to the panel to ensure accurate temperature settings.
