How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Before opening the smoker, unplug it. Never work on a live appliance.
Steps to restore power:
- 1. Check the outlet: Plug a lamp or other small appliance into the same outlet to confirm it has power. Reset any tripped GFCI or breaker.
- 2. Inspect the power cord: Examine the Old Smokey cord for cuts, burns, or kinks. Wiggle the cord gently at the plug and where it enters the smoker while watching for intermittent power (if any lights flicker).
- 3. Test the cord continuity: With the smoker unplugged, remove the access panel and disconnect the cord from the internal terminal block. Use a multimeter to check continuity from each blade of the plug to the corresponding internal wire. Replace the cord set if open.
- 4. Check internal fuse (if present): Some models include an inline fuse or board-mounted fuse. Locate and test it with a meter; replace only with the same type and rating.
- 5. Inspect terminal block and wiring: Tighten any loose screws on the power terminal block. Look for signs of overheating or melted plastic and replace damaged parts.
- 6. Evaluate the control board or thermostat: If power is present at the control or thermostat input but the unit remains dead, the control module or mechanical thermostat may have failed and require replacement.
Note: If the breaker trips immediately when you plug in the smoker, see the ground fault/short circuit scenario instead of continuing to reset the breaker.
