Possible Causes

Unplugged or broken internal temperature sensor, damaged sensor wiring harness, failed temperature probe, faulty control board sensor input

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker before inspecting wiring.

  • Locate the internal temperature sensor: Inside the cabinet, find the metal probe mounted to the side or back wall. Confirm it is firmly attached and not bent into contact with racks or food.
  • Check wiring connections: From the back of the smoker, remove the access panel and trace the sensor wires to the control board. Ensure the connector is fully seated on the board and that no wires are cut, pinched, or melted.
  • Test the probe: Disconnect the probe from the control board and measure its resistance with a multimeter at room temperature. Compare to Pit Boss specifications (typically a few kΩ for an NTC sensor). An open circuit or wildly off value indicates a bad probe.
  • Replace if needed: If the probe is faulty, install a new cabinet temperature sensor probe designed for your Pit Boss model. Route the wiring away from hot surfaces and sharp edges.
  • If Er1 remains: The control board’s sensor input may be defective. Replace the main control board if all wiring and the probe test good.
