Possible Causes
Corrupted control board firmware, failed display/control PCB, loose wiring harness to control board, power surge damage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before removing the control panel.
- Power cycle: Unplug the smoker for at least 10 minutes to fully discharge the control board. Plug back in and see if the error clears.
- Inspect wiring harness: Remove the front control panel and verify all connectors to the main control board and display board are fully seated. Look for bent pins, corrosion, or burned spots.
- Check for moisture: If the smoker has been exposed to heavy rain or washing, allow the control area to dry completely. Use a hair dryer on low, keeping it at a safe distance.
- Surge protection: If the error appeared after a storm or power event, the board may be damaged. Future use should include a surge protector.
- Replace the control board: If Er3 persists, replace the main control board assembly with the correct Pit Boss part number for your model.
