Possible Causes
Failed membrane keypad, damaged display PCB, loose ribbon cable between keypad and main board, moisture intrusion into control panel
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before opening the control panel.
- Inspect the keypad area: Check for cracks, water ingress, or grease buildup around the buttons. Wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
- Check ribbon cable: Remove the control panel cover and locate the flat ribbon cable from the keypad/display to the main control board. Ensure it is fully inserted and locked in place.
- Look for corrosion: If there is visible corrosion on the keypad connector or board, clean gently with contact cleaner and a soft brush, then reconnect.
- Test button response: After reassembly, plug in and test each button. If Er4 remains or buttons do not respond, the keypad or display PCB is likely defective.
- Replace UI assembly: Install a new control panel / keypad assembly compatible with your Pit Boss electric smoker model.
