Display shows Er5 and the smoker shuts down or will not heat.

Safety first: Ensure the smoker is unplugged and completely cool.

• Check airflow: Confirm the exhaust vent is open and not covered with foil. Remove any obstructions around the smoker that could trap heat.
• Locate the high-limit thermostat: On most Pit Boss electric smokers, it is mounted on the back or top of the cabinet. Inspect for discoloration, cracks, or melted terminals.
• Test continuity: Disconnect the wires and use a multimeter to check continuity across the thermostat. An open reading on a non-resettable type means it has failed and must be replaced.
• Inspect wiring: Follow the wires from the high-limit to the control board and heating element. Repair or replace any burned or broken wires using high-temperature-rated wire.
• Replace thermostat: Install a new high-limit thermostat with the same temperature rating as the original. Secure it firmly to the cabinet surface for proper sensing.
