Possible Causes
Failed ambient temperature sensor, sensor unplugged from control board, damaged sensor cable, control board sensor input fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker before accessing sensors.
- Identify sensor type: Some Pit Boss electric smokers include an external or ambient sensor for advanced control. Refer to your manual to locate it (often near the intake or control panel).
- Check connections: Ensure the ambient sensor plug is firmly connected to the control board. Look for pinched or cut wires.
- Test resistance: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance with a multimeter at room temperature. Compare to Pit Boss specifications. An open or shorted reading indicates a bad sensor.
- Replace sensor: Install a new ambient temperature sensor if the original is defective.
- Control board replacement: If a known-good sensor still triggers Er7, the control board input may be faulty and the main control board should be replaced.
