Possible Causes

Failed high-limit thermostat, temperature probe shorted or out of range, control board sensing circuit fault, blocked exhaust or restricted airflow

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels. Never work on a hot cabinet.

  • Power reset: Unplug the smoker for 5–10 minutes, then plug back in and try a new cook cycle. Sometimes the control board will clear a temporary overheat condition.
  • Check ventilation: Verify the exhaust vent and intake openings are not blocked by foil, grease, or debris. Open the vent fully and remove any obstructions.
  • Inspect the high-limit thermostat: Locate the high-limit (overheat) thermostat on the back wall or near the top of the cabinet (small round disc with two wires). Check for a manual reset button (if present) and press it firmly. If it has no reset and appears heat-damaged or cracked, it should be replaced.
  • Inspect the temperature probe: Inside the cook chamber, locate the internal temperature sensor probe (usually a metal rod on the side wall). Clean off heavy grease buildup with a soft cloth and mild degreaser. Make sure its wiring at the back of the cabinet is intact and not pinched or melted.
  • Test continuity: With the unit unplugged, use a multimeter to test continuity of the high-limit thermostat and temperature probe (per Pit Boss specs). An open high-limit or shorted probe will trigger ErH and must be replaced.
  • If ErH persists: The control board’s temperature sensing circuit may be faulty. Replacement of the main control board is recommended; if you are not comfortable with wiring, contact a qualified technician.
