Display shows ErL and the Pit Boss electric smoker will not heat or only warms slightly.

Safety first: Unplug the smoker before removing panels or touching wiring.

• Check door seal and environment: Make sure the door is closing fully and the gasket is intact. Extremely cold or windy outdoor conditions can also contribute to low temperature; shield the smoker from wind.
• Inspect the heating element: Look inside the smoker at the bottom for visible damage (burned spots, breaks, or warping). If the element does not glow or heat at all during a cook cycle, it may be open.
• Test the heating element: With the smoker unplugged, remove the rear or bottom access panel to reach the element terminals. Use a multimeter to check resistance across the element. An infinite reading indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
• Check the high-limit thermostat: Locate the high-limit thermostat and test for continuity. If it is open and does not reset, replace it.
• Inspect the temperature probe: Clean the internal temperature sensor and check its wiring for damage. A faulty probe can misreport low temperatures and trigger ErL.
• Control board check: If the element and thermostats test good, the control board relay may not be sending power to the element. Inspect for burned spots on the board. Replacement of the main control board is typically required if the relay has failed.
