Possible Causes

Failed high-limit thermostat, Blocked exhaust vent causing heat buildup, Grease buildup around heating element, Faulty control board temperature calibration

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely. Do not bypass safety devices.

  • Check exhaust and airflow: Verify the top vent and any side vents are open and not blocked by foil, grease, or debris. Restricted airflow can cause overheat faults.
  • Clean around element: Remove racks and drip pan. Inspect the heating element area for heavy grease or foil blocking heat flow. Clean with a non-abrasive degreaser and a nylon brush.
  • Inspect high-limit thermostat: Access the back or bottom panel to locate the high-limit thermostat (small disc thermostat mounted near the element wiring). Check for signs of overheating or melted terminals.
  • Test thermostat continuity: With the smoker unplugged, disconnect one wire from the high-limit thermostat and test for continuity. An open reading at room temperature indicates a failed thermostat that must be replaced.
  • Replace high-limit thermostat: Remove mounting screws, transfer wires to the new OEM high-limit thermostat, and reinstall in the same location.
  • If E3 persists: The control board may be misreading temperature and require replacement by a qualified technician.
