How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker from the wall outlet and allow it to cool completely before opening any panels.

Steps to check and correct:

  • Inspect the sensor lead: Locate the temperature sensor probe inside the smoker cabinet (usually a small metal probe on the back or side wall). Follow its wire through the back of the cabinet to the control box. Look for cuts, burns, or pinched spots.
  • Check connections: Remove the controller access cover. Find the sensor connector on the control board and gently unplug/replug it several times to clean the contacts. Ensure it is fully seated and not corroded.
  • Continuity test (if you have a meter): With the smoker unplugged, disconnect the sensor from the board and measure resistance across the two sensor leads. An open (OL) reading indicates a failed sensor or broken wire. Typical RTD sensors will show a finite resistance (often 100–1200 Ω depending on type and temperature).
  • Check for pinched cable: Make sure the sensor wire is not trapped between the cabinet and back panel or door, which can break the conductor.
  • Replace if open: If the sensor is open or physically damaged, replace it with a compatible Smokin-It temperature sensor/RTD assembly. Route the new wire along the original path and secure it away from the heating element.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall covers, plug the smoker back in, and power on. Set a low temperature and verify that the E1 code is cleared and the temperature reading appears normal.

When to call a technician: If the wiring and sensor test good but E1 persists, the control board sensor input may be defective and should be diagnosed or replaced by a qualified technician.
