Possible Causes

Shorted RTD sensor leads, Moisture inside sensor connector, Melted sensor insulation contacting cabinet ground, Failed temperature sensor causing low resistance

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power and let the smoker cool before working on it.

Diagnostic and fix steps:

  • Visual inspection: Locate the internal temperature sensor and follow its cable to the back of the smoker. Look for melted insulation, bare wires touching each other, or contact with the metal cabinet.
  • Dry any moisture: If the connector or wiring is wet from cleaning or weather, gently dry it with a cloth and allow it to air dry completely. Do not use the smoker until all moisture is gone.
  • Check the connector: Open the controller compartment and unplug the sensor from the control board. Inspect for corrosion, water, or carbon tracking between pins. Clean lightly with electrical contact cleaner and let dry.
  • Resistance test: With the sensor disconnected, measure resistance across the two sensor leads. A very low resistance (near 0 Ω) or fluctuating reading may indicate a shorted sensor. Compare to expected values from the service manual if available.
  • Isolate the short: If the sensor tests good, inspect the harness along its entire length for spots where the insulation has rubbed through and is touching the cabinet. Repair with high-temperature heat-shrink or replace the harness.
  • Replace sensor if needed: Install a new Smokin-It compatible temperature sensor assembly if the original is shorted or damaged. Secure the cable away from the heating element and sharp edges.

When to seek service: If a known-good sensor still triggers E2, the control board's sensor circuit may be faulty and require replacement by a professional.
