Possible Causes

Failed control board temperature regulation, Temperature sensor reading too low (miscalibrated), Heating element relay stuck closed, Poor airflow causing localized overheating near sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely. Do not continue to operate if it is overheating.

Steps to address E3:

  • Check set temperature: Verify that you are not accidentally setting an excessively high temperature. Reset the controller to a moderate temperature (e.g., 225°F) and see if E3 reappears.
  • Inspect sensor placement: Ensure the internal temperature sensor is not touching the heating element or a hot metal surface. It should be mounted in free air inside the cabinet.
  • Clean interior: Heavy grease buildup can create hot spots. Clean the interior walls, racks, and drip pan to improve heat distribution and airflow.
  • Check door seal: A severely leaking door gasket can cause the controller to drive the element continuously, overshooting temperature. Inspect the door gasket for gaps or damage and adjust the latch for a snug fit.
  • Test element control: With the smoker unplugged, remove the controller cover and inspect the heating element relay on the control board. If the contacts are welded closed, the element may stay on full power. This typically requires control board replacement.
  • Sensor verification: If possible, compare the smoker's displayed temperature to an independent oven thermometer. If the display is much lower than actual, the sensor may be reading low and causing overheating. Replace the sensor if it is out of calibration.

Important: Persistent E3 faults after cleaning and sensor checks usually indicate a failing control board or relay. Have a qualified technician test and replace the control module if necessary.
