Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker immediately. Allow it to cool completely and verify there is no active fire or smoldering grease.
Inspection and reset:
- Locate high-limit thermostat: On many Smokin-It models, a high-limit thermostat is mounted on the back or top of the cooking cabinet, inside the control compartment. It may have a small red reset button.
- Check for obvious overheating: Inspect the interior for heavy grease buildup, charred wood chunks, or signs of a flare-up. Clean thoroughly before reuse.
- Reset the thermostat: With the smoker unplugged and cool, press the red reset button on the high-limit thermostat (if present) until it clicks. If it immediately trips again on the next use, investigate airflow and element control.
- Verify wiring: Ensure the wires to and from the high-limit thermostat are tight and not burnt. Repair or replace any damaged terminals.
- Test continuity: Using a multimeter, check continuity across the thermostat terminals when it is cool. An open reading indicates a failed thermostat that must be replaced.
Important: Do not bypass or short the high-limit thermostat. It is a critical safety device. If it continues to trip, have a technician check for control board or element issues causing overheating.
