Possible Causes

New smoker burn-in not completed, Plastic or packing material left inside, Wiring insulation overheating near element, Drip pan liner burning

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect wiring or insulation is burning, turn off and unplug the smoker immediately.

Steps:

  • Initial burn-in: For new units, run an empty burn-in cycle at 250–275°F for 2–3 hours with the vent open to burn off manufacturing oils.
  • Remove foreign materials: Inspect the interior for any plastic, tape, or packing materials accidentally left inside. Remove any foil or liners that may be contacting the element.
  • Check wiring near element: From the rear or bottom access, ensure no wires are touching the heating element or hot metal surfaces. Re-route and secure with high-temp ties if needed.
  • Inspect insulation: Look for discolored or charred insulation around the cooking chamber. If present, have a technician evaluate for overheating causes.
