Possible Causes
Leakage current from EMI filters exceeding upstream RCD rating, Shorted output cable or connector, Incorrect use of additional external RCD with built-in RCD, Internal fault in power module
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Shock and fire hazard: Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker without investigation.
- Check RCD type: Ensure the upstream RCD is of the correct type and rating recommended by ABB (e.g., Type A or B, appropriate mA rating) and that you are not using redundant RCDs unnecessarily.
- Inspect cable and connector: Look for visible damage or moisture. Dry thoroughly and replace damaged cables.
- Test without vehicle: Power the charger with no vehicle connected. If the breaker still trips, the fault is internal to the charger.
- Internal inspection (technician): A technician should test insulation resistance and check for shorts in the power module and RCD module.
- Replace faulty module: Replace the power module or RCD module if they are found to be causing leakage or short circuits.
